Living in close proximity to a major metropolitan city, our landscape witnesses some of the worst direct effects of anthropogenic activities. The most significant and major impact has been habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation. Some specific issues of habitat degradation that we passionately resist and mitigate are pollution in the form of plastic waste, industrial effluence, deforestation and forest fires. We conduct regular outreach, awareness and sensitization campaigns/workshops in villages, towns and cities to address these concerns.
We conduct regular plastic clean-up drives with local communities, schools and colleges, providing them a great opportunity to engage in activities which reduce the impacts of plastic pollution on native habitats.
Anti snare drives are utilized to engage volunteers and local people to inform them about the legal implications of poaching any wildlife, alert them so that they know what to watch out for (traps, snares & pits). We conduct educational workshops to teach school children of the uniqueness and value of their local biodiversity.
The dry deciduous and scrub forests of Bannerghatta are highly prone to fires especially during summer months. If left unmanaged, these fires can devour large portions of forested land endangering biodiversity as well as people. A Rocha offers assistance to the forest department regularly by volunteering our help, supplying essential equipment like fire blowers, shoes and water bottles and alerting the authorities when monitoring in high risk times e.g. festivals.
