Some of the key scientific contributions that A Rocha India has made towards the landscape we work in are via various wildlife monitoring techniques like camera trapping, biodiversity assessments, population studies and more. We have published work on several taxa like mammals, insects, birds, reptiles and trees. [link publications].
Alongside studying the biodiversity of the landscape we have conducted several other surveys to unearth the wealth of indigenous community knowledge related to the people and the wildlife of Bannerghatta.
Over the past few years we have also been monitoring three elephant corridors that fall within the BHL, dividing the landscape into grids. We monitor the functionality of the corridors, this also allows us to record and developmental activities that are erupting within the corridors.
Our work includes regular, long term monitoring of the Asian elephant populations of Bannerghatta under the AECP. We are also starting an important monitoring project to study elephant distribution across 3 states in southern India
Some of our achievements include the assessment of elephant proof barriers (EPBs) around the Bannerghatta National Park. We monitor these on a regular basis, providing systematic reports and management recommendations. Mapping of road networks, accessibility stations, water bodies & elephant attractants in forest fringe villages & farmlands which is an important database to map conflict in the area.
We captured the first records of honey badgers during our mammal surveys and are monitoring the influx of a possible tiger population since 2015
