Farming

Commercial farming has devastating effects on the ecosystem and especially soil health and this in turn affects the entire biotic system.

Commercial farming has had devastating effects on the environment. This degradation has acute consequences in areas where the forest and farm are adjacent to each other. Chemicals can leach into the forest, rivers and the ecosystem through the soil. Apart from this, commercial farming, due to its scale, can also disturb the behaviour and ecology of wildlife leading to unhealthy adaptations and undesirable consequences. To preserve the integrity of our landscape, we have instituted an organic farming project. We recognize that this transition can be difficult, and so we support farmers in this transition through various means towards more sustainable and earth-friendly farming practices. We provide seed and manure to willing farmers. We organize several workshops, focus group discussions, capacity building field visits and teach them sowing and manure making techniques to set them up for success. Farmers are also informed regarding government policies, aid and certifications available for organic farmers. We network to create a sustainable supply chain for the produce once it is ready for harvest.

Working collaboratively with farmers is a crucial part of conservation efforts in India. Our projects focus on learning about traditional practices, needs and concerns of farmers who are most affected by human – wildlife conflict, climate change and other factors that impact their livelihoods and well being.

In the wake of the environmental crisis, we find that the first to be affected have been farming communities. We employ a wholistic approach to build capacity within these communities and help them understand to importance of a healthy ecosystem.
